About Dr. Robert M. Smith
In addition to his service as president and provost at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Robert M. Smith served in administrative posts at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Wichita State University.
Under his guidance, Dr. Smith’s leadership, Slippery Rock University made extraordinary advancements, including a 22 percent increase in enrollment while improving its academic reputation. The university also experienced a 16 percent increase in retention and a 24 percent increase in graduation rates. The university received several awards for its innovative work in enrollment management, and Dr. Smith and his team often were invited to share their expertise at national conferences on all aspects of enrollment management.
An early adopter of performance metrics and performance funding, Dr. Smith led a cultural transformation at Slippery Rock University that became a model for analytical data-driven decision-making. For that achievement, he received commendation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2012. He co-chaired the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s revisions of performance funding that received praise from the Lumina Foundation, and has been a frequent speaker and panelist on institutional performance, performance metrics and incentive funding models.
A facilitator for AACRAO’s Presidential Seminars on Strategic Enrollment Management, Dr. Smith has been the senior faculty member in four executive development programs, including NACUBO’s Collegiate Management Business Institute.
